Did you know...

  • Grebes can actually dance! When a Grebe meets its partner they will do a ‘courtship dance’ together for all the lake to see. If they are apart from each other for a long time and are reunited, they dance again!

  • They do something called ‘mirroring’, which is where they copy each others moves in almost perfect time. It’s lovely to watch!

In the below video see mirroring 10 seconds in and skip to 1 minute 50 seconds to see them tap dance on the water…

  • Grebes have specially adapted feet shaped like petals that help them to swim very quickly under water.

  • These feet also help them to lift up onto the water’s surface to do their own tap dance – how amazing is that!?

  • Many grebes have red eyes, which some of you may find quite scary, but they’re not aggressive. In fact they like to leave the gaggles of geese and ducks at the front of the lake to be fed by the humans and they go out to the water to dive for their food.
